The role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in mattress sustainability

Environmental sustainability has become a central priority for the European bedding industry. In this context, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the most reliable and internationally recognized tool for measuring and reducing the environmental impacts associated with mattresses throughout their entire life cycle.

What is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

LCA is a standardized methodology (ISO 14040 and 14044) that evaluates the environmental performance of a product by considering all stages, from raw material extraction to end-of-life management. For mattresses, this means analyzing every step: material sourcing and processing, manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal or recycling.

The LCA Process for Mattresses

  1. Goal and scope definition
Establishing the purpose of the study, system boundaries, and parameters to be monitored.
  2. Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)
Collecting data on material and energy flows, emissions to air, water, and soil.
  3. Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)
Quantifying environmental impacts in key categories: climate change (carbon footprint), energy consumption, water use, acidification, eutrophication, ecotoxicity.
  4. Interpretation of results
Critically analyzing data to identify hotspots and opportunities for improvement along the value chain.

Key Benefits of LCA for the Mattress Industry

  • Hotspot identification: LCA reveals which processes contribute the most to environmental impacts (e.g., polyurethane foam production, steel spring manufacturing, transportation).
  • Eco-design and innovation: Insights from LCA help manufacturers select more sustainable materials, reduce overall product weight, and design mattresses for easier disassembly and recycling.
  • End-of-life management: LCA shows that recycling and pyrolysis can be significantly more sustainable than landfill or incineration, delivering substantial savings in CO₂ and energy.
  • Transparency and credibility: LCA results can be translated into Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), third-party verified documents that allow objective product comparisons.
