EU–India Free Trade Agreement
Today, the European Union and India officially concluded negotiations on a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking the largest trade deal ever negotiated by either party.
The agreement represents a significant step in strengthening economic and political ties between two of the world’s largest economies and aims to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, and regulatory frameworks.
According to the European Commission, the negotiated draft texts on the EU side will be published shortly. The Commission will then submit its proposal to the Council for the signature and conclusion of the agreement. Once adopted by the Council, the EU and India may formally sign the agreement. Following signature, the agreement will require the consent of the European Parliament and a final Council decision before it can enter into force. Ratification by India will also be required.
Key trade elements of the agreement
The FTA provides for the elimination or reduction of tariffs on more than 90% of EU goods exports to India. In addition, both parties have agreed on simplified customs procedures and commitments aimed at ensuring a more transparent, predictable regulatory environment and faster clearance of goods.
These provisions are intended to facilitate trade flows and improve market access for businesses on both sides, while reinforcing regulatory cooperation.
Initial implications for the mattress and bedding sector
At present, India remains a moderate trading partner for the EU in the mattress segment. Current trade flows show that India exports approximately €2.2 million worth of mattresses to the EU, while EU exports to India amount to around €4.3 million.
From a tariff perspective, European exporters currently face a Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff of around 20% when exporting mattresses to India, while Indian exporters pay an average tariff of approximately 3.7% when exporting to the EU.
The future reduction or elimination of these tariffs could significantly improve market access and competitiveness, particularly for EU manufacturers.
EBIA’s next steps
While the agreement represents an important milestone, its concrete implications for the European bedding industry will need to be carefully assessed once the final texts are published and implementation timelines become clearer.
European Bedding Industry Association will closely monitor developments, analyze the sector-specific impact of the agreement, and keep its members informed as the ratification process advances.
Further updates and analysis will follow once additional details become available.
