A new regulatory framework for sustainability

Shaping the future of mattresses in Europe

The European Union has introduced a groundbreaking piece of legislation: the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force on 18 July 2024. It is set to transform how products are conceived, manufactured, and marketed across Europe.

Mattresses among top priorities

In the first ESPR Work Plan (2025–2029), mattresses are listed as a priority product group, together with textiles, furniture, tyres, metals, detergents, and certain chemicals. The regulation establishes requirements for:

  • Durability and reliability

  • Easier repair, upgrading, and recycling

  • Recycled content and restrictions on hazardous substances

  • Environmental traceability through the Digital Product Passport (DPP)

Digital Product Passport: transparency and circularity

The DPP will provide key information on the sustainability and circularity of mattresses, accessible via QR code or online database. It will empower consumers, authorities, and recyclers with transparent data for informed decisions.

Ban on destroying unsold goods

The ESPR also introduces restrictions — and in some cases prohibitions — on destroying unsold products such as textiles. Manufacturers must report on the quantities, weight, and reasons for product disposal, driving a more responsible supply chain.
